Before Surgery

Please follow the instructions of your doctor and the instructions given to you if you received a pre-admission phone call from the Center.

  • The nursing staff will instruct you on eating/drinking prior to your procedure/surgery. If you are having a non-surgical procedure you should follow your doctors instructions.
  • All patients must arrange for a responsible adult to STAY in the center. Your driver must have a valid driver’s license. All patients are required to have someone stay with them until the next day. For your safety a family member or friend must drive you home.
  • Our staff will be in contact with you regarding a deductible or co-pay due at the time of registration. Payments can be made by credit card, debit card, cash, money order or personal check. You may qualify for interest free Care Credit loan call 1-800-300-3046. If you have any questions regarding your financial responsibility, you may contact the Center directly at (248) 886-5555.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol 24 hours prior to your procedure/surgery.
  • Shower or bathe the night before surgery, or on the morning of surgery.
  • The Waiting Room space is limited. Please do not bring more than two people with you. One individual needs to remain at the facility during your stay.
  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK anything after midnight the night before your surgery. Unless instructed otherwise.
  • Do not take aspirin, Motrin or NSAIDS 5-7 days before surgery. Stop Coumadin and Plavix 5-7 days prior to surgery with the consent of the doctor who started you on these medications.
  • Bring a listing of all medications that you are currently taking to include dosage (ex., 50 mg) and frequency (ex. One time a day), last time taken. Ask your doctor or the pre-admission nurse if you have questions regarding which medications to take. If you use inhalers bring them with you.
  • Please take heart, blood pressure, seizure or breathing medications with a sip of water in the morning before your procedure unless otherwise directed.
  • If you are a diabetic: Do not take diabetic medication the day of surgery. Take your blood sugar in the morning, and bring the result with you.
  • If you are having an Endoscopic/Surgical procedure and have not received an arrival time from your physician, please call the Center the day before your scheduled procedure, (between the hours of 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM) to receive your procedure and arrival time. See numbers on back.
  • If your procedure is on a Monday, please call the Center the Friday prior to your procedure for your arrival time.

Day of Surgery

Park at the east end of the building. You will be discharged from the east end under the covered garage.

  • Please arrive at the Center at the time specified by the nurse. Preoperative time allows for registration, any preoperative testing, preparation, assessment, and adjustments in the surgery schedule. We do not open until 6 am.
  • Bring your insurance card/s and driver’s license. Leave all other valuables at home.
  • Do not wear any make-up or apply any body lotion the day of surgery.
  • Wear your glasses instead of contact lenses, If you must wear contacts, bring a container to store them. Wear your hearing aids.
  • All jewelry and body piercings must be removed and left at home.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, preferably a button down shirt.
  • When it’s time for surgery, a surgical nurse will take you to the operating suite. The amount of time in surgery depends on your particular procedure.
  • After surgery you will return to your room. The nurses will monitor your recovery and care for you until your condition allows for your family/friends to join you.
  • Your surgeon will talk to your family members on your progress immediately after surgery.

Discharge

  • When your condition meets the discharge criteria of your physician and the center, you will be prepared for discharge.
  • Your nurse will review home care instructions with you and your family/friend.
  • Your physician will give you information about your diet, activity, medications, dressing, pain, follow-up visits, returning to work, shower or bathing, and lifting.

At Home After Your Surgery

  • It is very important that you follow your home care instructions. Call your doctor for any questions or problems.
  • Due to the effects of anesthesia, you should not drive a car, operate machinery, make important decisions, sign any legal documents, or drink any alcoholic beverages until the day after your surgery.
  • A nurse from the Center will call you after surgery to see how you are feeling and to address any questions or concerns. We want to make sure that your recovery progresses well and that you are totally satisfied with our services.
  • Be sure to schedule a postoperative appointment with your physician.

Children Under 12 Years of Age

  • Bring extra underwear or diapers for young children. If they are taking a bottle, bring one empty bottle and one with their usual formula.
  • Please bring a security item with them, such as a favorite stuffed animal or blanket.
  • Parents will remain with children until the time of surgery.
